Hello fellow students,

My name is Anthony Sissey. I am an old boy of Mekaela Academies. I graduated from Manuel Alexander School in 2001. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Design at the Maseno University.

It is apparent that the Kenyan job market is growing more and more competitive as the days go by. However all is not lost .Through hard work we can always pursue our dreams and turn them into reality.

I would like to point out that there is no end in learning. It is for this reason that I take this opportunity to make myself available to all of you so that you may be able to exploit all the available resources at you disposal.

For most of you students in your senior years ,there is no need to be anxious. With proper preparation that you have received you will be able to get through any hurdles in your way. Though it is paramount that one secures a bachelor’s degree, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your career path has been cut out for you. This is usually a stepping stone  towards more opportunities that have bee made available to you.

The Ministry of Education through the Kenya National Examination Council offers opportunities to students for degree courses on merit. These are allocated to individuals through the Joint Admissions Board (J.A.B) based in Nairobi University. J.A.B selects students who will be partially government sponsored. The rest of the students who would like to be enrolled for a bachelor’s degree have to do so through the self-sponsored programme (parallel).

There are two general categories of Bachelor degree courses offered by Joint admissions board. These are the Arts and the Sciences. Every student has to make a choice whether to opt for the science-based courses or the arts-based courses. There are a lot of window periods that students are allowed to choose their preferred courses. The first chance usually comes while registering for the  K.C.S.E  exams at this stage the opportunities are unlimited. One can choose any course that you want provided that you will sit for the subjects that the course will require.

The next opportunity comes after results of a candidate have been released. At this point one usually has to visit the Joint Admissions Board in Nairobi University. Here one can make reviews to choices that had been made earlier. This time round, there are fewer alternatives. However one gets the opportunity to select courses that one has qualified for. This means that chances of getting a slot in the J.A.B selection increase. It also gives you an opportunity to select a university that is favourable to suit an individual’s needs. The window opportunity to make changes to candidates’ course selection is usually very short and lasts for about one month.

The final opportunity comes after a student has registered into the university that he or she has been called to. Here the chances are very slim and hard to come by. They are usually regulated by policies of  individual universities and the chances that are available. Here one has got to make choices on the courses that the university has to offer.

It is for this reason that it is better to start planning early for your future careers. Any inquiries can be forwarded to me at anthony@mekaela.net and I will be more than happy to help out.

Yours,

Anthony Sissey.
